The former Indian cricket team captain, coach and sublime spinner, Anil Kumble, turned 52 today, i.e. October 17, 2022.
Even after 14 years of retirement, Kumble holds the record of being the highest wicket-taker in international cricket for India with 956 wickets and was often regarded as the biggest match-winner of the team. He is also the third-highest wicket-taker in international cricket. The unorthodox spinner made his international debut in April 1990 against Sri Lanka. The tall Indian spinner didn’t offer much turn like his peers but his consistent line and length and extra bounce made him a lethal weapon for his captain. The cricketer from Bengaluru was known for his exploits in the Asian sub-continent. When people questioned his skills outside of Asia, the former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain pulled off a series-defining spell for the team in the iconic India tour of Australia in 2003/04. Then, captain, Sourav Ganguly fought with the selectors to include him in the squad and Kumble didn’t disappoint as he emerged as the highest wicket-taker of the entire four-match series.
In 1999, the cricketer popularly known as Jumbo become the second bowler to pocket ten wickets in a Test inning. He accomplished this feat against arch-rivals Pakistan in the Delhi Test. In the evening of his career, the legendary bowler was announced captain of the Indian side.
