UEFA Super Cup final set to take place in Belfast

UEFA has decided against moving the UEFA Super Cup final from Belfast. The European Super Cup will take place between Champions League winner Chelsea and Europa League winner Villarreal on August 11 at Windsor Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland. 

Chelsea secured the UEFA Champions League title for the second time in their history last week after a 1-0 win against Manchester City. Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the match, which was enough to make Thomas Tuchel’s side champions of Europe. Chelsea will be looking to win Super Cup to kick start a big season under Tuchel.

On the contrary,  Villarreal surprised everyone as they won against Manchester United on penalties 11-10 in Gdansk. The Spanish club won first European trophy in the club’s history. Villareal head coach Unai Emery has made a habit of winning the Europa League as he collected his fourth title in the competition. Emery will be looking to add another European trophy at the start of next season.

Previous reports suggested that European Super Cup was going to take place in Istanbul The Turkish city was scheduled to host the Champions League final, but the travel restrictions for British fans forced UEFA to move the final to Portugal. Turkish sports minister that Turkey should be compensated by getting back the hosting duties for the Super Cup final and also for the Champions League final in 2023. However, Irish FA CEO Patrick Nelson confirmed that Super Cup will go ahead in Belfast as planned.

 “We have kept in close contact with our partners at UEFA on the matter and following these discussions we are delighted that they have confirmed that the game will stay in Belfast.”

The ticket details for the final and capacity details of the stadium will be discussed and finalized in the coming weeks. This match would be played a week before the start of domestic leagues across Europe.
