Jurgen Klopp finds Philippe Coutinho’s replacement at Liverpool

Harvey Elliot was in full flow in Liverpool's 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao.

Liverpool had a successful pre-season campaign and now will be looking to start strong in the Premier League this weekend. The Reds had a disappointing season last year and are desperate to make amends and reclaim their throne. It seems like Jurgen Klopp might have finally found a suitable replacement for Philippe Coutinho in the squad.

The Brazilian left Merseyside in January 2018 to join FC Barcelona. Since then Liverpool has won both the UEFA Champions League and Premier League, but haven’t found a player like Coutinho.

This could change with the youngster Harvey Elliot in the picture. The midfielder was in stunning form against Athletic Bilbao and impressed everyone. From transition plays, to the midfield to forward line and keeping tight possession, he was the star.

What grabbed the attention was the fact that Jurgen Klopp was using him in a typical role similar to Philippe Coutinho’s. Playing as a deeper midfielder and creating more chances by dropping down to the halfway line. This homegrown version could well be Liverpool’s game-changer.

“He was good today, not the first time. He can play the position.“A little bit later, when he went up front and Salah into the centre, Harvey can play on the right wing and smashed the ball on the crossbar. He can play different positions, there is no doubt about it,” said Jurgen Klopp.

In pre-season we wanted to see him in a deeper role because as a young player you have to learn a lot of things, when you are a bit more outside you get the ball from time to time and we wanted him to be a bit more involved.”
