Ormax Media, a media consultancy organisation, has unveiled its latest research report, The Ormax Sports Audience Report 2024. The analysis is based on the country’s biggest sports research study, which was done between November 2023 and January 2024 among 12,000 audiences in both urban and rural India.

The survey covered 21 sports, 53 sports competitions, and 52 clubs and franchises, in addition to numerous characteristics of Indian audiences’ sports viewing habits.

According to the research, India has an average sports audience of 678 million (67.8 crore). The top three sports are cricket, football, and kabaddi, with audiences of 612, 305, and 208 million, respectively.

Speaking about the need for the report, Shailesh Kapoor, Founder & CEO – Ormax Media, said, “With an increase in digital consumption, TV viewership is no longer an accurate way of estimating sports consumption in a large and heterogenous country like India. This report is a part of our initiative to build industry data using primary audience research across various categories, and is a follow-up to reports like The Ormax OTT Audience Report, and Sizing The Cinema.”

According to the survey, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Manchester United, and Patna Pirates are the most well-known franchises in each of the top three sports. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are the Indian Premier League‘s (IPL) second and third-placed teams, respectively.

Virat Kohli is the nation’s most popular sportsperson, whereas MS Dhoni is ranked second despite retiring from international cricket. The study compares the recognition of major sports events, franchises, and individuals across demographic and market sectors such as gender, age, NCCS, population strata, and states.

Keerat Grewal, Head – Business Development (TV, Streaming & Brands), Ormax Media, said, “The Ormax Sports Audience Report: 2024 looks at the Indian sports landscape from an audience-first perspective, and is a comprehensive reckoner for anyone looking at crafting a sports monetization, content or communication strategy for the Indian market, ranging from broadcasters, franchise owners, sports, associations, sports management firms, and advertisers.”
