BCCI unlikely to appoint Anil Kumble as head coach: Reports

Kumble had taken up the role of the head coach for the Indian cricket team before he decided to step down in 2017.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently in search of a foreign coach. Anil Kumble isn’t interested to take up the role neither the idea of bringing the former captain back as the head coach impressed the BCCI board members.

A source stated that “Well, neither Kumble wants to return, nor BCCI officials, other than president Sourav Ganguly, are interested. The board is looking for a foreign coach now. Kumble knows that he will have to face the same old team members (Virat Kohli and others in the team), then why would he return? While Ganguly has recommended his name, other officials are not in agreement with him.”

He further added, “VVS Laxman too will not be able to get the post. However, there’s still a month left, so let’s see if there is a change of mind. Also, look at Kumble’s record as coach, it is not that impressive. See what is happening with Kings Punjab in IPL.”

Sources also suggest that India’s batting coach, Vikram Rathour has also planned to apply for the position of head coach.

With Kumble and VVS Laxman being out of the contention, the BCCI would likely try and hire a foreign coach for the Indian cricket team.

Kumble had taken up the role of the head coach for the Indian cricket team before he decided to step down in 2017 as reports suggested of him having serious differences with Kohli. Kumble resigned from the post just after the Champions Trophy final defeat against Pakistan.

Kumble is currently in the UAE handling the responsibility as the head coach of the IPL franchise Punjab Kings. The KL Rahul-led franchise is currently placed sixth in the points table with a total of eight points.
