Virat Kohli to step down from T20I, ODI captaincy after ICC T20 World Cup: Reports

Rohit Sharma will be roped in as the captain of the team after the ICC T20 World Cup.

Virat Kohli could be soon stepping down as the captain of the Indian national team in the T20I and ODI format, as per multiple reports. Virat Kohli will be quitting the captaincy role after the ICC T20 World Cup which is scheduled to be held in October in the UAE.

India’s vice-captain in the limited-over format, Rohit Sharma will be roped in as the captain of the team after the ICC T20 World Cup.

The BCCI sources said, “Virat himself will make the announcement. He is of the view that he needs to concentrate on his batting and go back to becoming what he’s always been — the best batsman in the world.”

The reason behind this decision is clear that Kohli wants to focus more on his batting. Kohli has been struggling with his form lately, he isn’t able to score big and hasn’t scored a century since 2019. Kohli wants to pay more attention to his batting and will hand over the responsibility of captainship to his deputy.

Rohit Sharma has been IPL’s most successful captain, leading his side (Mumbai Indians) to five IPL titles ever since becoming the captain of the team in 2013.

Under Rohit’s captaincy in limited-overs, the Indian team has displayed exceptional performances, winning eight out of ten ODI matches and 15 of the 19 T20I matches. Rohit has fared well in his limited opportunities of captaining the national side.

Kohli, however, will be leading the team in the ICC T20 World Cup and will aim to clinch his first ICC trophy.

This decision might help the current Indian skipper to focus on his batting and regain his form.
