In the Semi-Final 2 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, India will square off against defending champions England at the Providence Stadium in Guyana tonight, i.e., June 27 at 8 PM IST.

The Indian team will be full of confidence after being undefeated throughout the campaign. The Men in Blue experienced an identical scenario at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, winning all ten games before being defeated in the finals by Australia. The unit will also bear this in mind and be careful not to give away wickets or runs cheaply. This might also be Rohit Sharma‘s penultimate ICC outing as skipper and he will thus aim to finish on top.

Speaking of the skipper’s opening partner, Virat Kohli will also have to repay the faith shown by team management. Kohli’s form determines India’s faith in such high-octane encounters, therefore, the game’s legend must eventually arrive to the party. Both openers will have to deal with Jofra Archer and Reece Topley‘s pace attack, and facing the new ball will be difficult under such conditions. The middle order will also play an important role in tonight’s encounter. It will be interesting to see how Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, and Shivam Dube handle the spin of Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali, and Liam Livingstone. Dube has been specifically chosen to play spin, and this will be his ultimate test. With the ball, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh will be tested by English openers, while Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Pandya will lead the bowling attack in the middle overs, hoping to reduce the total.

England have performed fairly well to get to this point, winning two games in the Super Eights and two in the Group stages. While many would agree that the unit’s combination is still superior to other teams in the competition, it will be difficult for management to choose between Chris Jordan’s form and Mark Wood’s pace. Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, and Harry Brook will handle middle overs, but if Jos Buttler bats beyond the powerplay, stopping him will be difficult. Furthermore, with the wicket expected to favour spinners, the team would desire Buttler to bat deep. Jordan, Adil Rashid, Topley, and Archer are all expected to remain in the playing XI. The Indian batters will also be wary of Rashid, who has a good record against Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav. The right-arm leg break bowler has previously taken both batters’ wickets and has only given 72 runs from 68 balls against Kohli.

The battle will be tough, and England will recall their decisive victory over India in the 2022 World Cup semi-finals and will be confident in their ability to repeat it.

Head-to-Head:

India and England have a long and thrilling rivalry in T20 cricket. Of the 23 games that both nations played against each other, India prevailed in 12, and England in 11. It’s interesting to note that in the T20 World Cup, both sides have won two games each.
