Movistar Plus+ secures media rights to EuroLeague Basketball in Spain

Following the deal, Movistar Plus+ will provide coverage of EuroLeague Basketball in Spain from October 5.

The Spanish digital platform owned by Telefónica, Movistar Plus+ has secured the media rights to EuroLeague Basketball in Spain.

Following the deal, the digital platform will provide coverage of the premier European basketball tournament in the country. This will also include coverage of four Spanish basketball teams: Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, FC Barcelona, Valencia Basket, and Real Madrid.

Beginning on October 5, the platform will show the top two games from each round to all of its subscribers, while the company’s premium service will offer up to five games per round and all of the matches by Spanish clubs.

The new agreement has added EuroLeague Basketball to the broadcaster’s existing rights holder portfolio with the NBA and the Spanish domestic league (ACB). The digital platform previously provided coverage of the top European basketball competition till the 2019/20 season.

Paulius Motiejunas, CEO of EuroLeague Basketball, said, “We’re glad to find a new home in Movistar Plus+ for the next three seasons. Movistar Plus+ is synonymous with quality. I am sure that the large and growing fanbase in Spain will enjoy the broadcasts of the competition, and not only the live games but also the extensive programming around them.”

The Spanish telecom company Telefónica owns Movistar Plus+ (formerly Movistar+), the digital television subscription platform. Distribution of the service includes ADSL, optical fibre, as well as satellites like Astra. The platform was created as a result of the merger of Canal+ and Movistar TV and debuted on July 8, 2015.
