The Hero Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023, the men’s field hockey tournament for the six best Asian national teams, is all set to begin its seventh edition tomorrow i.e. August 3, 2023.
The Asian Hockey Champions Trophy began in 2010 as a women’s tournament. Following the popularity of the women’s Asian Champions Trophy, the competition for men was launched in 2011 featuring six of the continent’s top teams. The Asian Champions Trophy was an annual event until 2013. However, beginning in 2016, the competition was held every two years. Following the covid-19 epidemic, the 2020 edition was postponed to 2021.
India and Pakistan have won the Asian Champions Trophy thrice, each. South Korea will enter the competition as a defending champion, they beat Japan in the 2021 final.
The Asian Hockey Federation is in charge of organising the event, which will take place at the renowned Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Egmore, Chennai. Teams from all over the continent will come together to play for honour, pride, and the prestigious championship title.
The tournament will commence with South Korea taking on Japan at 4 PM IST. Moreover, the highly anticipated match between the two arch-rivals, India and Pakistan will be the last match of the league round.
All six participating teams will play each other once in the seventh edition of the league. The league stage will consist of 15 matches and the top four teams after the league stage will advance to the semifinals. The winners of the two semifinals will meet in the final on August 12.
Interestingly, the inclusion of vibrant fan parks will allow fans to watch live broadcasts of the tournament’s games on large screens, creating a platform for supporters to support their favourite teams together.
