Australia tour of India 2023 1st ODI: India script comfortable five-wicket win over visitors

Following this win, India have taken the lead in the three-match ODI series.

In the first ODI match of the three-match series, India beat Australia by five wickets at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

India won the toss and bowled first. The Men in Blue were at their best tonight as the side kept taking wickets at regular intervals. While Mohammed Shami bowled his career best, others also joined him to outperform the visitors and bundle them for 276 runs.

In the chase, both openers, Ruturaj Gaikwad (71) and Shubman Gill (74), gave India a strong start. Both batters together scored 142 runs for the first wicket partnership. While Gaikwad hit 10 fours, Gill hammered six fours and two sixes. Soon after, Team India lost three quick wickets, after which skipper KL Rahul (58*) joined the party and led India to a comfortable victory. Along with Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav (50) also showcased his skills and scored a brilliant fifty. While, Sky hit five fours and one six, Rahul also struck four fours and one match-winning six.

While Mitchell Marsh got out quite early, David Warner (52) smashed a decent half-century, which included six fours and two sixes. Warner, along with Steve Smith (41), added 94 runs for the second-wicket partnership. Marnus Labuschagne (39), Chris Green (31) and Josh Inglis (45) also contributed a few runs in the end to take the Aussies to a good score of 276.

With the ball in the first inning, Mohammed Shami recorded his career best as he plucked a fifer and gave away just 51 runs. One wicket each was also taken by Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja.

While defending, Adam Zampa scalped two wickets, while Sean Abbott and Pat Cummins got one wicket each.

Mohammed Shami was adjudged Man of the Match for his outstanding bowling show. Following this win, India have taken the lead in the three-match ODI series.
