Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) has officially re-entered India’s sports broadcasting market with the launch of four dedicated television channels under its newly unveiled “Unite8 Sports” brand, marking the company’s biggest push into live sports media since the sale of its Ten Sports network nearly a decade ago.
The broadcaster confirmed that the new network will comprise Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2, and Unite8 Sports 2 HD, with separate Hindi and English feeds aimed at expanding Zee’s reach across India’s increasingly diverse and fast-growing sports audience.
The launch signals a major strategic shift for Zee as live sports continues to emerge as one of the most valuable drivers of television viewership, streaming consumption, advertising revenue, and subscriber growth across the Indian media landscape.
Bavesh Janavlekar, Chief Business Officer of the new sports division, said, “In a vast country like India, there is a rising demand for sports which are global in appeal yet rooted within the heartland. The consumption of live sports content was accelerating because of growing audience affinity for multiple sporting formats.”
According to industry reports, the network is expected to adopt a multi-sport strategy featuring football, cricket, kabaddi, badminton, wrestling, boxing, and combat sports, positioning Unite8 Sports as a broad-based sports destination rather than a cricket-exclusive offering.
Zee is also believed to be actively pursuing premium domestic and international media rights as it looks to strengthen its sports portfolio in an increasingly competitive market. The company confirmed it is currently in discussions with FIFA regarding the broadcast and streaming rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in India, underlining its ambitions to secure marquee global sporting properties.
As part of the rollout strategy, Zee has reportedly repurposed portions of its existing English entertainment channel infrastructure to fast-track distribution and establish an immediate presence across television platforms nationwide.
The move places Zee back into direct competition with major sports broadcasters, including JioStar and Sony Sports Network, at a time when demand for live sports content continues to reshape India’s media and entertainment industry.
