Wrestling Champions Super League; a new league for Indian wrestlers

Led by a trio of Olympic and world championship medalists, Sakshi Malik, Geeta Phogat, and Aman Sehrawat, the WCSL aims to revolutionise the landscape of Indian wrestling.

A groundbreaking initiative in Indian sports has taken shape with the announcement of the Wrestling Champions Super League (WCSL).

Led by a trio of Olympic and world championship medalists, Sakshi Malik, Geeta Phogat, and Aman Sehrawat, the WCSL aims to revolutionise the landscape of Indian wrestling.

The league, which is set to provide a platform for Indian wrestlers to compete against international rivals, was unveiled by the founding members.

Malik, a bronze medalist at the Rio Olympics, expressed her vision for the WCSL, “The WCSL, a world-class international league, will skill & strengthen our wrestlers to dominate the sport globally by taking on the world’s best in a hyper-competitive, expertly supervised environment with best-in-class support systems in place.

“We are delighted that Aman shares our vision and is joining us on this journey.

Sehrawat, a Paris Olympics bronze medalist, echoed Malik’s sentiment, “This league is a very commendable initiative which will help Indian wrestling greatly and therefore I want to be a part of it and support it fully”, he said. We look forward to working closely with this bright young star of Indian wrestling.“

Phogat, a former world champion, emphasized the need for support from the wrestling federation and the government, “Sakshi and I have been planning this League for long. Soon it will take a final shape. We have not yet spoken to the WFI but it would be great if WFI and government support us. It will be the first league operated only by the players.

“We are doing it for the players, for their benefit. That is the idea and vision, so no one should have any problem with it. It’s a proud moment for us. We won’t stop anyone from getting involved in it, if WFI or government comes on board, even better. We have not yet spoken to them.”

While specific details about the league’s format, venues, and prize money are yet to be announced, the founders have expressed their commitment to creating a competitive and exciting environment for athletes and fans. The Wrestling Champions Super League is poised to become a major force in Indian sports, offering a platform for young talent to thrive and inspiring the nation to embrace the thrill of athletic competition.
