WPL Auction 2023: Smriti, Ashleigh, Harmanpreet bag impressive bids in Marquee Set

The first player to go under the hammer was Smriti Mandhana, who is also the most expensive player in the WPL auction so far.

The first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction is currently taking place, and everyone is glued to their couches to watch the action. A total of 409 cricket players will get ready to be auctioned off. This article will discuss the marquee list, which features star players who have signed with some of the league’s top teams.

The first player to go under the hammer was the star Indian opener, Smriti Mandhana. The southpaw batter got sold to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for INR 3.4 crore. With this, RCB will have one more top-star number 18 playing for their side now.

To put this in numerical perspective, RCB spent INR 3.4 crore, or almost 25% of their budget of INR 12 crore, on Smriti Mandhana in the first set. This is equivalent to a men’s team spending INR 25.5 crore on a single player.

Furthermore, team India’s skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was picked by the five-time men’s Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, Mumbai Indians (MI) for INR 1.8 crore.

Additionally, Ashleigh Gardner and Sophie Ecclestone from the marquee list were sold to Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz for INR 3.20 crore and INR 1.80 crore, respectively. Ellysey Perry, a famous cricket player from Australia, was selected by RCB for a whopping INR 1.80 crore.
