The Central and Eastern Europe’s leading low-cost airline, Wizz Air, has been announced as the airline partner for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship, reinforcing the commercial framework of one of track and field’s newest global competition formats.

The partnership will support the inaugural edition of the championship, scheduled to take place in Budapest from September 11 to 13, 2026, as World Athletics introduces a high-performance season finale designed to bring together the world’s top-ranked athletes in a compact and fan-focused format.

Under the agreement, Wizz Air will play a key role in supporting international travel logistics for athletes, officials and event stakeholders, ensuring efficient connectivity through its expanding European and international route network.

The airline operates a fleet of more than 260 aircraft and connects passengers through over 1,000 routes to nearly 200 airports, positioning it as a strategic mobility partner for global sporting events.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said, “We’re delighted to be announcing Wizz Air as the official airline for the first-ever World Athletics Ultimate Championship. This event will put the best athletes in the world front and centre. We’re pleased that Hungary’s largest airline will be playing a significant role in the success of the Ultimate as it comes to Budapest.”

Balázs Fürjes, the Co-Chair of the Organising Committee, added, “Budapest is a global sports capital. The passionate, sport-loving Hungarian fans have witnessed 30 major international competitions of 25 summer Olympic sports in the last seven years, and we are delighted to host the pioneering Ultimate Championship, welcoming the best of the best athletes in the world. We proudly share this historic moment with Wizz Air, Central and Eastern Europe’s No.1 airline.”

Silvia Mosquera, Commercial Officer at Wizz Air, continued, “We are incredibly proud to partner with the World Athletics Ultimate Championship and the local organising committee as the official airline of this landmark event. As an airline committed to connecting people, we’re excited to help bring the world’s best athletes to our home city of Budapest. This partnership reflects our dedication to excellence, connectivity, positivity and inspiring energy – values shared by both Wizz Air and this world‑class competition, especially in how we reach and energize global audiences. Let’s WIZZ!”

As part of the agreement, each Ultimate Champion will receive Wizz Air travel vouchers, providing athletes with access to destinations across the airline’s extensive network. The initiative highlights the evolving role of brand partnerships in sport, where experiential rewards are increasingly integrated into sponsorship structures to enhance athlete engagement and brand visibility.

The World Athletics Ultimate Championship has been designed as a biennial competition that brings together Olympic champions, world champions and Diamond League winners to compete in a condensed, high-intensity format aimed at identifying the top-performing athlete in each discipline. The event is expected to feature approximately 400 athletes from around 70 countries, representing the highest level of global track and field competition.

The introduction of the Ultimate Championship reflects a broader strategic evolution within the athletics calendar, combining elite competition with commercial partnerships that support athlete mobility, fan engagement and international event operations. The collaboration with Wizz Air also underscores the growing importance of airline partnerships within the global sports economy, where travel infrastructure plays a critical role in enabling major international events.
