In the realm of Pro Kabaddi, where player salaries have skyrocketed and competition has intensified, Puneri Paltan stand tall as the defending champions, ahead of the 11th season of the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).
Talking about the player auction, Puneri Paltan were not the busiest, since they had retained most of their core team prior to the auction. Their most costly acquisition was raider V Ajith Kumar, who was acquired for INR 66 lakhs. Apart from V Ajith Kumar, the Paltan purchased eight additional players in the Player Auction.
To delve deeper into the team’s strategies, challenges, and aspirations, SportsMint Media had the privilege of interviewing Kailash Kandpal, the Chief Executive Officer of Insurekot Sports Private Limited, the company that owns Puneri Paltan.
During the PKL 11 auction, Mr Kailash Kandpal offered valuable insights into the team’s approach to sponsor acquisition, the significance of star players like V Ajith Kumar, and the evolving dynamics of the PKL.
1. Given the recent surge in player salaries, with eight players crossing the one-crore mark this year, it’s evident that the spending power of Pro Kabaddi teams has significantly increased. What are your thoughts on this trend?
While the overall expenditure remains comparable, there’s been a noticeable improvement in player quality over the years. This is why we’re witnessing more players reaching the one-crore milestone and gaining prominence.
2. Despite another season without a title sponsor, teams continue to secure individual sponsorships. How do stakeholders and team owners perceive this situation?
That’s a question best directed to Mashal Sports Pvt. Ltd. and the broadcaster. However, I believe they’re likely holding out for a fair valuation. If they’re unable to secure a suitable partnership, it’s better to wait for the right opportunity.
3. The recent Olympic success has increased attention to sports other than cricket and football. Do you think this will lead to a boost in viewership, especially considering the growing popularity of niche sports?
Undoubtedly, the Olympic medals have played a pivotal role in shifting perceptions. People are no longer solely focused on cricket and football. Kabaddi, with its consistent broadcasting over the past decade, has garnered a dedicated fanbase.
4. The 2023–24 season witnessed a growth in viewership. How do you think this will impact the ability of teams to acquire or retain sponsors?
A larger viewership base is a significant factor in attracting sponsors. We’re pleased to report that most of our sponsorship slots are already filled, thanks to the efforts of our team led by Ramita Sanil. This demonstrates the growing interest of brands in kabaddi.
5. Can you elaborate on the process of pitching to potential sponsors? What are the key selling points you emphasize?
We highlight the value that Kabaddi can bring to a sponsor’s overall portfolio. We emphasise the alignment between the brand and Puneri Paltan, a champion team, and discuss how we can effectively integrate their brand into our marketing efforts.
6. As defending champions, how will you approach the upcoming season in terms of strategy and sponsor acquisition?
While our primary goal is to acquire more sponsors and increase revenue, our team strategy will evolve based on the specific challenges and opportunities that arise during the season.
7. You have experience in other sports industries. How does that knowledge contribute to your role with Puneri Paltan?
We apply learnings from other sports to identify best practices and integrate them into our kabaddi operations. This approach has proven successful, as evidenced by our championship win last season.
8. V Ajith Kumar’s presence adds a competitive edge. What was the rationale behind his acquisition, and why was he considered a valuable addition to the team?
Our coach, BC Ramesh, believed that Ajith would provide a crucial balance to our team, especially in terms of left and right raiders. His defensive skills, particularly in two- and three-point raids, make him a valuable asset. Additionally, he can serve as a surprise element during matches.
