Former Indian captain and one of the most celebrated cricketers of all time, Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test cricket at the age of 36, capping up a brilliant 14-year career in the format.

Kohli expressed his profound connection to Test matches in a touching social media message. He said, “It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life. There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever.”

His retirement comes only days after Indian Test skipper Rohit Sharma‘s retirement, which marks the end of an era in Indian cricket. Kohli leaves a tremendous legacy in Test cricket, pledging to treasure his memories with pride and appreciation. Kohli is India’s fourth-highest run scorer and has the fourth-most tons. He led India in 68 games and won 40. Kohli is Indian cricket’s most successful skipper. He has won more matches than anybody else and has a higher victory percentage.

Kohli, an influential name in Indian cricket with 123 Test appearances, 9,230 runs, and 30 hundreds, has experienced a decline in his Test performance in recent years, nevertheless, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wanted him to remain at least for the England tour.

His departure leaves India without two experienced Test captains ahead of a five-Test series against England beginning on June 20. The BCCI is now tasked with rebuilding the squad, maybe looking to younger leaders like Shubman Gill to fill the vacuum. Kohli’s departure signals the end of an era, since he is one of India’s most important cricketers, both on and off the pitch.
