Viacom18 acquires exclusive rights to SA20

The partnership has been inked for 10 years and Viacom18 will provide exclusive coverage of the competition to the fans in India.

The Indian media and entertainment company, Viacom18, has acquired the media rights of the new T20 league in South Africa, SA20.

The partnership has been inked for 10 years and Viacom18 will provide exclusive coverage of the competition to the fans in India. Joburg Super Kings, Pretoria Capitals, Durban’s Super Giants, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Paarl Royals and MI Cape Town are the six teams, which will compete in the upcoming tournament. The owners of these six teams have franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Viacom18 Sports CEO Anil Jayaraj, said, “We continue to offer fans an immersive and engaging experience by strengthening our sports portfolio with some of the best cricket action through SA20. T20 is the most popular cricket format with Indian fans. The history and legacy of South Africa cricket and the popularity of South African cricketers in India make it a thrilling proposition for cricket fans in India. We expect significant viewership and fan engagement as the event will be played in prime-time.”

SA20 League Commissioner and former South Africa captain Graeme Smith, said, “Today is a ground-breaking day for South African cricket. This long-term partnership between the SA20 and Viacom18 as our official Indian broadcaster is a catalyst that supports our ambitions to build the world’s second biggest league.” 

After failing to receive a broadcast deal from India, the governing body of South Africa signed the dotted lines with the media baron, Viacom18.

SA20 is a fruitful addition to the esteemed portfolio of Viacom18, which already includes – FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, IPL, Diamond League, National Basketball Association (NBA), LaLiga, Serie A, Ligue 1, and top ATP and BWF events.
