Twitter launches emojis for JIO Women’s T20 Challenge

Ahead of the upcoming Women’s T20 Challenge, Twitter India and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have joined hands to launch seven new custom emojis representing the three teams and captains. The Women’s T20 Challenge is set to kick off on November 4 in Sharjah. The tournament will have three league games and one final. It is going to be contested between three teams — Trailblazers, Supernovas, and Velocity.

Fans will be able to activate these emojis by tweeting with the following hashtags: #MithaliRaj or #Mithali, #Harmanpreet, or #Harman, #Smriti or #SM18, #WomensT20Challenge, #Velocity, #Supernovas, and #Trailblazers.

For the Women’s T20 Challenge, all the matches will start at 7:30 PM IST except the second match between Velocity and Trailblazers will be played at 3:30 IST in the afternoon.

Twitter yesterday broke the news on its platform by releasing a GIF’ showcasing different emojis and hashtags that will activate the emojis.

Before the start of the 2020 Dream11 IPL season, Twitter also launched custom emojis that represent the eight IPL teams and the IPL trophy. The emojis received positive responses, so the social media platform has gone ahead with introducing the same for the Jio WT20 challenge.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, fans cannot watch their favorite players battle it out in the field. This unique situation demands better virtual interaction for fans with teams. The introduction of emojis will further help in boosting fan engagement for women’s cricket.

This is the first time that an Indian women’s sports league has got its own Twitter emojis. In 2017, Mithali Raj became the first woman cricketer from India to get an emoji during the Women’s Cricket World Cup.

The Women’s T-20 challenged also received a big boost at the end of last week as Jio became the principal sponsor of the tournament. The continued support for the tournament will lead to the expansion to a much lucrative league.
