Tokyo Olympics 2020: India may send contingent early to Tokyo

Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that the ministry is planning to send the Indian contingent in advance for the Tokyo Olympics so that the athletes adjust to the conditions comfortably. While talking to ANI, Rijiju admitted that adapting to weather of Tokyo will help the athletes in their events.

“Only three months are left for the Olympic Games. Athletes are giving their best to book their seats for the Olympics and do well for the country. The ministry is also planning to send the Olympic team in advance so that they would get time to adjust to the climate over there. They will be able to train in those conditions which will help them during the competition.”

Rijiju also confirmed that arrangements for Indian athletes are underway in different locations across Japan. He also reassured that detailed planning is being done to make sure that athletes are given best possible conditions to deliver good performances for India.

The Tokyo Olympics originally slated to take place in 2020 will be held from July 23 to August 8 this year. While the qualifications rounds are still going on, these are the athletes who have qualified for the games as of March 18, 2021.
