Tokyo acquires rights to host World Athletics Championships 2025

Nairobi, Silesia, and Singapore were contenders for hosting the event.

Tokyo won the race to host the World Athletics Championships 2025. The officials finalized the decision a day before the beginning of the 2022 edition, which got delayed due to Covid-19.

Nairobi, Silesia, and Singapore were contenders for hosting the event. Budapest would be hosting the 2023 edition.

Tokyo last hosted the event in 1991, the event is well-known for the tremendous world-record-breaking long jump duel between Mike Powell and Carl Lewis. The 2007 edition of the championship was held in Osaka, Japan.

The championship council body announced that the World Athletics Cross Country Championships 2023 will be conducted in Bathurst, Australia, the 2024 edition in Medulin and Pula, Croatia, and the 2026 edition in Tallahassee, Florida.

Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics, said, “Within an extremely strong field of candidates Tokyo offered a compelling bid. I hope this will be a shining light for Japan as they celebrate 100 years of the JAAF in 2025 by bringing world-class athletics back to the people in Tokyo.”
