Major League Baseball (MLB) has intensified its expansion strategy in India by appointing Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav as its official brand ambassador while extending its media rights partnership with JioStar, combining athlete-led marketing with nationwide broadcast distribution to accelerate the league’s growth in one of the world’s largest sports markets.

The twin announcements, made ahead of the 2026 MLB All-Star Week in Philadelphia, reflect MLB’s broader international ambitions as it seeks to cultivate new audiences through strategic partnerships, localised storytelling and enhanced media accessibility.

As the league’s first official ambassador in India, Suryakumar Yadav will spearhead MLB’s promotional efforts across the country, participating in marketing campaigns, fan engagement initiatives and digital content designed to introduce baseball to Indian audiences. The Indian T20 captain will also travel to the United States to attend MLB All-Star Week from July 10 to 14, where he will participate in league events and experience baseball’s premier mid-season celebration.

Speaking about the partnership, Suryakumar Yadav said, “One of the best things about sport is that it brings people together, no matter where they’re from. I’m excited to partner with Major League Baseball and be part of its journey in India. I look forward to learning more about the game myself and helping more fans discover the energy, excitement and culture that make baseball something else.”

MLB has also renewed its partnership with JioStar, ensuring continued live coverage of regular-season games, the MLB All-Star Game, the postseason and the World Series across the broadcaster’s television and digital platforms. Although the financial terms and duration of the agreement were not disclosed, the renewal secures MLB’s long-term visibility across India’s largest sports broadcasting ecosystem.

Jeremiah Yolkut, MLB Senior Vice President of Global Operations and Events, said, “India is home to one of the most vibrant sports cultures in the world, and these partnerships allow us to connect with fans in a meaningful way. Suryakumar is one of the most recognised athletes in India, with an ability to connect with millions of fans across the country. Combined with our renewed partnership with JioStar, we are building a powerful foundation to further expand baseball’s reach throughout the country.”

The combined initiatives highlight MLB’s evolving international growth model, pairing premium media distribution with locally relevant athlete ambassadors to build long-term fan engagement. With cricket continuing to dominate India’s sporting landscape, MLB is betting on the similarities between the two bat-and-ball sports, alongside Yadav’s immense popularity, to introduce baseball to a new generation of Indian fans and strengthen its commercial presence in the region.
