Spanish striker Diego Costa reaches verbal agreement with Atletico Mineiro

Diego Costa has verbally agreed to join Atletico Mineiro for $3 million.

Spanish striker Diego Costa has agreed to join Atletico Mineiro. The former Chelsea striker was not getting any minutes at the Wanda Metropolitano ever since the arrival of Barcelona and Uruguayan player Luis Suarez.

Last year in December, Costa terminated his contract at Atletico Madrid. When he was asked if he had any plans of extending the contract he refused outrightly. Although Diego Costa also had offers from the Portuguese side Benfica in 2021, that deal didn’t happen.

Costa left Atletico Madrid last year in December abruptly and has been out of action ever since. According to the latest reports, Atletico Mineiro and Costa have verbally agreed to a $3 million deal.

The 32-year-old is all set to undergo his medicals at Bello Horizonte next week and will sign the official contracts. It’s understood that Atletico Mineiro has sold a number of players in order to accommodate Costa’s wages. Some of them are Marrony Bueno, Gabriel and Diego Tardelli.

Brazil’s top-flight leader Atletico Mineiro believes Costa is a substantial addition to the squad. Coach Cuca especially wanted the deal to go through. However, it remains to be seen if Diego Costa can live up to his expectations.

Atletico Mineiro was seen in action earlier today against River Plate, the former beat the latter 1-0. They will be playing their next fixture on August 15, Sunday against Palmeiras.
