Sony Corporation, a global leader in technology and entertainment, has announced the acquisition of a majority stake in STATSports Group, a global leader in athlete monitoring and performance analytics.

The move is designed to bolster Sony’s sports technology portfolio and expand its footprint in the rapidly growing sports data market.

STATSports’ wearable devices incorporate GPS, heart rate, and accelerometer sensors, offering more than 70 real-time metrics processed on-board for immediate feedback. By joining forces with Sony, STATSports’ wearable technology will complement Sony’s existing optical tracking and visualization solutions, including Hawk-Eye Innovations, KinaTrax, and Beyond Sports. The integration of wearable and optical tracking data positions Sony to offer a comprehensive performance analytics ecosystem for sports teams across multiple disciplines.

Speaking on the occasion, Rufus Hack, CEO of Hawk-Eye, Pulselive, Beyond Sports, and KinaTrax, said, “This acquisition is a powerful step in our journey to build the ultimate sports data and analytics engine, by integrating STATSports’ state-of-the-art wearable technology with our existing optical solutions. This opens up a path for new applications in performance analysis, as well as officiating, and fan engagement, which enables us to deliver a more complete and valuable solution to our partners and the entire sports community.”

Alan Clarke, CEO and Co-Founder of STATSports, added, “This is a landmark moment for STATSports. Since 2008, our mission has been to help teams and athletes reach their full potential through performance monitoring technology. Partnering with Sony allows us to accelerate that mission by integrating our wearable technology with Sony’s world-leading solutions. Together, we can set new standards in performance analysis, athlete development, and injury prevention, while also offering audiences new ways to engage with their favourite sports teams.”

STATSports currently serves over 800 professional sports organizations, including football clubs such as Arsenal FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Juventus, national football teams such as England and Portugal, New Zealand All Blacks, and South Africa Springboks in international rugby, as well as the NFL’s Washington Commanders and MLB’s LA Dodgers. The company also offers solutions to grassroots clubs and individual athletes, reinforcing its reach across all levels of sport.

This acquisition marks a strategic expansion for Sony in the sports analytics and wearable technology market, enabling the company to combine diverse datasets for richer insights and new performance applications. It also underscores Sony’s commitment to driving innovation across athlete performance, team management, and fan engagement.
