Sony Pictures obtains media rights for World Athletics Championships 2022

Fans in India will also be able to stream the competition live on Sony's OTT platform, SonyLIV.

One of the major sports broadcasters of India, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has announced that it has bagged exclusive media rights across the Indian subcontinent to the 2022 World Athletics Championships.

Dentsu, a Japanese agency, has sublicensed the rights to the broadcaster. For decades, the organisation has distributed World Athletics rights all over the world. The agency’s existing deal with World Athletics runs from 2020 to 2029 and covers global sponsorship and licencing rights as well as broadcast rights outside of Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.

In 2019, SPNI’s competitor Star acquired rights to the World Athletics Championships in Doha throughout the Indian subcontinent. In recent years, Zee Entertainment has also aired the event.

The World Athletics Championships 2022 commenced yesterday i.e. July 15. The tournament, which was delayed by 11 months last year to make room for the Tokyo 2020, will be held until July 24. Fans in India will also be able to stream the competition live on Sony’s OTT platform, SonyLIV.

The World Athletics Council confirmed recently that Tokyo will host the 2025 World Athletics Championships. The city was chosen over bids from Nairobi, Silesia, and Singapore.

The next edition of the World Athletics Championships will be held in Budapest in 2023.
