Sony Pictures Networks sign broadcasting rights extension for Lanka Premier League

The agreement includes Sony to telecast Lanka Premier League matches on Sony Six and Sony Ten 2 channels.

Sony Pictures Sports Networks India (SPSN) has announced that they will continue to broadcast the topmost domestic competition of Sri Lanka, the Lanka Premier League. After bagging the media rights of the tournament for the second season, the deal has been officially signed with IPG Group, the official franchise and broadcast holder of LPL.

The agreement includes Sony to telecast Lanka Premier League matches on Sony Six and Sony Ten 2 channels, along with the live streaming on over the top (OTT) platform SonyLIV.

Rajesh Kaul, chief revenue officer, distribution and head – sports business, Sony Pictures Networks India said, “With the onboarding of Lanka Premier League, we want to provide our viewers with some high-energy T20 cricket throughout December. Sri Lankan Cricket has always produced many world-class players and the inclusion of top international cricketers such as Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Faf du Plessis among others are contributing to the growth and popularity of the Lanka Premier League in the subcontinent. As the league gathers more fans, we want to make sure that no one misses the best of T20 cricket in India on our sports channels.”

He further stated that the appetite for cricket in India is huge, Sony’s goal is to bring quality cricket to their fans from across the globe.

The league will have huge names playing for different franchises. The likes of Shahid Afridi and Irfan Pathan will be part of the league as well. With so many superstars playing, it will definitely grab the eyeballs of cricket enthusiasts.

In the last season, LPL managed to see 155 million people tuning in to catch live action on TV and on social media, it achieved a reach of 218 million. The Lanka Premier League is set to be played between December 5 – 23, 2021.
