The renowned sports broadcasting company, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has announced the extension of its exclusive broadcast and digital rights for the historic Durand Cup for the next three seasons till 2027.
The Durand Cup, organised by the Indian Army Eastern Command on behalf of the three services, has been an integral part of Indian football since its beginning in 1888, providing a platform for the country’s premier clubs and developing talent. The tournament’s rich history and fierce rivalry make it a must-see event on the Indian football calendar.
The upcoming Durand Cup editions promise exciting matchups and high-octane football action between top Indian clubs and rising stars. Sony Pictures Network India receives full access to one of India’s oldest and most important football events. The extension grants Sony Pictures Networks India exclusive television and digital rights to the tournament, which will be broadcast live on Sony Sports Network channels and streamed live on SonyLIV in India and the subcontinent.
SPNI and Durand Cup have enjoyed a productive cooperation, with several activities carried out during the association. Last year, the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, introduced the trophies and kicked off the Durand Cup trophy tour in its 133rd edition. Sony also partnered with former Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri, NorthEast United FC team owner John Abraham, and Bollywood superstar Kartik Aaryan on specifically tailored advertisements as part of their long-standing partnership.
Since Sony became the broadcaster for the Durand Cup, the league has seen an increase in viewership over the past two seasons. The competition also had a 100% increase in total reach and a 27% increase in average impressions (relative to the 2023 season).
Rajesh Kaul, Chief Revenue Officer – Distribution and International Business and Head – Sports Business, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN), said, “At Sony Sports Network, our commitment to delivering the best in Indian football remains unwavering. Renewing the exclusive broadcast rights for the Durand Cup for three more seasons reinforces our dedication to elevating the tournament’s legacy and bringing top-quality football action to fans across India and South Asia. This partnership has led to a 100% growth in cumulative reach which reinforces our position as the home of Indian football, offering viewers not just live action but an immersive experience across television and digital platforms.”
Major General Rajesh Arun Moghe, VSM GOC Bengal Sub Area & Vice Chairman Durand Cup Organising Committee, commented, “The Durand Cup is proud to continue its journey as a tournament that blends rich legacy with bold ambition. Our re-association with the Hon’ble President of India has added immense prestige to the event, reaffirming its national importance. With this year’s edition being played across five states, the tournament has significantly expanded its footprint, bringing top-tier football closer to fans and communities across the country. Renewing our partnership with Sony Sports Network for three more seasons ensures that the tournament reaches every corner of India and South Asia through world-class coverage.
“This collaboration not only enhances visibility but also strengthens our shared vision of making Indian football more aspirational. The Durand Cup continues to provide a vital platform for the aspiring youth of India to test their mettle against the best in the business, shaping the future of Indian football with every match played.”
