The PGA TOUR has strengthened the commercial foundations of its revamped competitive structure by naming global insurance and reinsurance company Sompo as the title sponsor of a new tournament that will become part of the PGA TOUR Championship Series from 2028.
The multi-year agreement marks the first new sponsorship secured for the Championship Series since the TOUR unveiled its new competition model earlier this month. Before joining the elite tournament portfolio, the Sompo-sponsored event will debut as a full-field PGA TOUR tournament at Silverado Resort’s North Course in Napa, California, from July 29 to August 1, 2027, bringing regular TOUR golf back to the region.
From 2028, the tournament will relocate to a new host market, with the PGA TOUR confirming that further details on the destination will be announced in the coming months. The event will then form part of the Championship Series, the TOUR’s new premium competition model designed to replace the current Signature Events structure with approximately 15 elite tournaments featuring larger fields, traditional 72-hole stroke-play competition and consistent participation from the world’s leading players.
Dhruv Prasad, PGA TOUR Chief Commercial Officer, said, “Just a few weeks after we announced our new competitive model, we are delighted to welcome Sompo as the first new sponsor supporting the PGA TOUR Championship Series that will launch in 2028. We look forward to debuting this partnership in Napa in 2027 and are excited to announce its future home in a new market for the PGA TOUR in the coming months.”
James Shea, CEO of Sompo Property and Casualty, added, “We are proud to partner with the PGA TOUR at such an exciting moment for the sport and to help shape the future of one of its premier events. This partnership represents a major opportunity for Sompo to further expand our global brand awareness and showcase the strength of our business to customers, partners and communities around the world. As a multi-year sponsor of the PGA TOUR Championship Series, we are pleased to support a premier platform that reflects the same values of excellence, discipline and high performance, as well as a sense of responsibility to give back to our communities.”
For Sompo, the partnership provides a global platform to elevate its brand through one of professional golf’s most prestigious properties while strengthening engagement with customers, business partners and communities worldwide.
The announcement further underscores the PGA TOUR’s ability to attract blue-chip international partners as it prepares to launch the Championship Series in 2028. With Sompo becoming the first new commercial partner tied to the restructured calendar, the agreement signals growing confidence among global brands in the TOUR’s long-term strategic vision and its evolving premium event portfolio.
