Seven Network bags broadcast rights for Winter Olympics 2022

Seven Network clinch the broadcasting rights of the Beijing Winter Olympics Games in Australia. The event is set to take place in 2022. The Australian commercial broadcaster renegotiated the deal with International Olympic Committee (IOC) following the delay of the 2020 Olympics by 12 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Seven Network will cover the event on multiple platforms. The coverage of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was part of the previous deal between Seven Network and IOC. The deal was reportedly worth $141.6 million.

Seven’s chief executive James Warburton said, “The Olympic Games are part of our DNA at Seven, so we can’t wait to work with our partners at the IOC to deliver another incredible experience for Australian audiences.”

Warburton also insisted that negotiations were complicated, but IOC have been great partners, so they were able to find an amicable solution.

According to an official statement from the broadcast company, Seven’s coverage of PyeongChang 2018 garnered 16 million broadcast viewers across Australia. The resounding success of the event in 2018 helped Seven Network to dominate the Australian TV market.
