The Seattle Seahawks are poised to become the most expensive franchise ever sold in NFL history after a consortium led by Indian-American billionaire and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla agreed to acquire the Super Bowl-winning organisation from the estate of late Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen in a deal valued at US$9.612 billion.
The transaction, which remains subject to approval from NFL owners, eclipses the previous league record of US$6.05 billion paid for the Washington Commanders in 2023 and ranks among the largest franchise sales in global sports history. The agreement is expected to be reviewed by the NFL Finance Committee before being presented for a formal vote at the league’s upcoming owners’ meetings.
The Khosla-led ownership group will be headed by Neeru Khosla, who is set to become the Seahawks’ controlling owner, while Vinod Khosla and other members of the Khosla family will join the franchise’s ownership structure. To comply with NFL cross-ownership regulations, Vinod Khosla is expected to divest his existing minority stake in the San Francisco 49ers before the acquisition is completed.
The sale fulfils the long-term wishes of Paul Allen, who purchased the Seahawks in 1997 for US$194 million and oversaw one of the franchise’s most successful eras, including its first Super Bowl triumph in 2014. Since Allen’s death in 2018, the organisation has been operated by his sister, Jody Allen, as trustee of his estate. In accordance with Allen’s estate plans, proceeds from the sale will be directed to Allen Family Philanthropies to support a range of charitable initiatives.
“We are honoured to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks. We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organisation and fans everywhere,” said Vinod Khosla, on behalf of the Khosla family.
The acquisition further highlights the accelerating valuations of elite professional sports franchises, driven by the NFL’s unmatched media rights revenues, commercial strength and long-term investment appeal. It also marks one of the most significant investments by an Indian-origin business leader in North American professional sports, underscoring the growing influence of global capital in franchise ownership.
