SailGP has renewed its partnership with marine consultancy and survey specialist ABPmer through the end of the 2028 season, with the company continuing as the championship’s official tidal modelling supplier.
The multi-year extension reinforces a collaboration that has been in place since 2021 and highlights SailGP’s continued investment in advanced data and performance technology. Under the renewed agreement, ABPmer will continue providing high-resolution tidal and current intelligence to SailGP teams and race officials, supporting strategic decision-making and race operations at venues where tidal movements significantly influence on-water conditions.
As part of the partnership, ABPmer supplies race-day current forecasts at 10-minute intervals using advanced hydrodynamic modelling. The service is deployed across several SailGP venues, including Hong Kong, Perth, San Francisco, Halifax, New York and the upcoming Emirates Great Britain Sail Grand Prix in Portsmouth.
The data plays a vital role in the operation of SailGP’s F50 catamarans, which are capable of exceeding 100 km/h. Accurate tidal information supports a range of onboard systems, including navigation, wind analysis, flight control, performance optimisation and tactical planning, while also enhancing race management and operational efficiency throughout each event.
Alex Reid, SailGP’s Director of Performance Engineering, said, “Precise tidal data is critical from both a sailing and race management standpoint. A significant number of the calculations carried out on the F50S, spanning wind analysis, performance, navigation and control systems, all depend on it.
“The quality of data that ABPmer has delivered has been a genuine step forward, particularly given their capability to model complex flow scenarios. That translates directly into measurable gains on the F50 and across the broader SailGP ecosystem.”
The renewed agreement ensures SailGP will continue leveraging ABPmer’s ocean intelligence capabilities through 2028, supporting the championship’s growing global calendar while reinforcing its reputation as one of the world’s most technology-driven sporting properties. By integrating advanced marine science with elite competition, the partnership continues to enhance both team performance and the overall race experience for competitors, officials and fans alike.
