Actor, entrepreneur and sports investor John Abraham has expanded his footprint in global sport after joining the ownership group of Rotterdam Dockers, one of the six founding franchises of the inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL), as the competition continues to build momentum ahead of its debut season.
The investment marks Abraham’s latest venture in sports ownership, adding to his existing portfolio that includes Indian Super League club NorthEast United FC and Indian motorsport team Goa Aces. His arrival further enhances the commercial profile of the Rotterdam-based franchise while underlining growing investor confidence in cricket’s expansion across emerging international markets.
Abraham joins an ownership group featuring former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen, legendary fielder Jonty Rhodes and Managing Partner Madhukar Shree. The franchise is positioning itself as one of the league’s flagship teams by combining high-profile sporting expertise with strategic business leadership.

Scheduled to take place from August 26 to September 20, the inaugural ETPL will feature six city-based franchises representing Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin and Belfast across a 32-match tournament. The league has been developed in partnership with Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB), with the objective of accelerating participation, strengthening domestic cricket structures and unlocking new commercial opportunities across the European market.
Abraham’s investment also reflects a broader trend of celebrities and private investors backing emerging sports properties with long-term growth potential. As franchise cricket continues its global expansion beyond traditional strongholds, the ETPL is positioning itself to capitalise on Europe’s multicultural fan base, growing South Asian diaspora and increasing commercial interest from broadcasters, sponsors and institutional investors.
