In a groundbreaking move set to redefine the global esports landscape, the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) has announced the appointment of football icon Cristiano Ronaldo as the global ambassador for the Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025.
This landmark collaboration is poised to unite traditional sports and competitive gaming, leveraging Ronaldo’s unparalleled worldwide appeal to engage new audiences on an unprecedented scale.
The Esports World Cup 2025, a seven-week extravaganza scheduled to electrify Riyadh from July 8 to August 24, boasts an astonishing prize pool exceeding $70 million across 25 tournaments and 24 diverse game titles. As the global ambassador, Ronaldo will be the face of the tournament’s extensive promotional campaign, spearheading efforts leading up to and throughout the highly anticipated event.
Ralf Reichert, CEO of the Esports World Cup Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership and said, “Cristiano Ronaldo connects generations — from lifelong football fans to today’s emerging competitors. His pursuit of greatness mirrors the spirit of the Esports World Cup: the biggest stage for the best players. As Global Ambassador, he bridges traditional sport and competitive gaming, helping spotlight the next generation of athletes competing for global glory. We’re humbled to have the greatest of all time stand with us in this moment for esports.”
Ronaldo himself commented on his new role and said, “Sport is always evolving – and esports is one more frontier. The commitment, drive, talent, and intensity I have been able to see in esports athletes is no different from what I’ve experienced on the pitch. I’m proud to stand alongside these competitors and be part of a global event that’s inspiring a new generation.”
Further cementing his commitment to the esports world, Cristiano will also appear as a playable character in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, one of the 25 featured titles in the 2025 tournament lineup. This crossover underscores the increasing synergy between sports and gaming entertainment.
This strategic appointment aligns seamlessly with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, a national initiative focused on economic diversification and strengthening global presence through significant investments in sports and entertainment. The Esports World Cup is a cornerstone of this vision, aiming to establish Riyadh as a global hub for competitive gaming and foster sustainable career pathways for esports athletes and clubs worldwide.
Poised to be the largest multi-game competition in history, the Esports World Cup 2025 will bring together 2,000 elite players and 200 clubs from over 100 countries to compete for ultimate glory, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of competitive gaming.
