FC Barcelona teenager Ilaix Moriba has signed with the German club RB Leipzig, following problems regarding a new contract. The total deal is expected to be in the range of €20 million ($27.5 million).
Moriba will be signing a new five-year contract with RB Leipzig. Having been given a chance to play for the FC Barcelona first team, the young midfielder made eighteen appearances for the club. However, he was reluctant to extend his current contract.
Although Ilaix Moriba was being paid the highest salary for an academy product (€1 million per year), his agent’s still wanted more for him. Considering Barcelona’s financial problems, the club wasn’t particularly keen on increasing his wages.
As a result, FC Barcelona threatened to leave him on the bench for the entirety of the 2021/22 season or worse demote him to the FC Barcelona reserve side. Hence, Moriba has decided to join RB Leipzig and enjoy regular playing time. He is expected to fly to Germany and complete his medicals and other formalities.
RB Leipzig’s next Bundesliga fixture will be on September 11, Saturday against Bayern Munich at 10 PM IST at Red Bull Arena Leipzig.
