Tokyo Olympics’ silver medalist Mirabai Chanu has been lauded throughout the country for making the nation proud during the ongoing Games in Tokyo. Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the women’s 49kg category by lifting a combined 202kg (87kg +115kg) in the two rounds of the competition. The athlete has been felicitated by the Minister for Railways Ashwini Vishnaw as the athlete has been rewarded by Rs 2 crore and promotion in her job in the Northeast Frontier Railway.
Mirabai Chanu, who won the medal on the first day itself and received a warm welcome on her arrival in India. She was greeted and congratulated by the concerned authorities. Chanu works for the Railways department in the Lumding Division, one of the five railway divisions under the Northeast Frontier Railway zone of the Indian Railways.
Chanu expressed her gratitude towards the immense support and love she received from the authorities throughout her preparations for the mega event, especially after the disappointment she went through during the Rio Olympics in 2016. The Railways announced their reward as an appreciation gesture for Mirabai’s hard work and passion.
Railway Minister of India, Ashwini Vaishnaw tweeted this announcement and said, “It was great to meet and congratulate the pride of India and honour of Indian Railways, Mirabai Chanu. Also felicitated her & announced Rs. 2 Cr, a promotion and more. She has inspired billions around the world with her talent, handwork and grit. Keep winning for India!”
In terms of branding, Mirabai Chanu is signed by sportswear brand Adidas. The German brand introduced so many different campaigns featuring Mirabai in the buildup to the Games. Social media campaigns like #createdwithadidas #madepossiblewithadidas and #ImpossibleIsNothing were responsible for the attention she received heading into the Games.
IOS Sports Management Company, the firm that manages and represents Chanu in the commercial aspects also expressed their delight over this amazing achievement. The Vice-President of the company, Mr Rahul Trehan spoke to the media and said, “Mira was one of the most passionate and disciplined athletes I have ever seen. She visited her hometown once in the last 2 years and we are really happy that our athlete has opened the account for India in the medal tally, IOS and the entire nation is proud of her. Her Olympic win will definitely bring a change in Indian Sports as far as Weightlifting is concerned. We are getting a lot of calls from global brands for her and we will finalize these brand endorsements for her shortly”.
In addition, popular pizza restaurant chain Domino’s also announced free pizzas for a lifetime to Chanu. This came after the weightlifter jokingly said she wanted to have a pizza on winning the silver medal at the Games on Saturday.
