Petro-Canada, a Suncor Energy business, has solidified its role as a national partner of the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and official partner of the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) for another eight years.
This extension has guaranteed unwavering support for Canadian athletes, coaches, and their families until the end of 2032.
The renewed commitment will be instrumental in propelling Team Canada towards success at upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games, including Paris 2024, Milano Cortina 2026, Los Angeles 2028, the 2030 Winter Games, and Brisbane 2032.
Commenting on the partnership, Dave Oldreive, Suncor’s Executive Vice President – Downstream, said, “Our motto Live by the Leaf extends to supporting those who wear the maple leaf, which is why we’re thrilled to carry on Petro-Canada’s longstanding partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee and the Canadian Paralympic Committee. As we prepare to join fans in cheering on Team Canada in Paris, we’re equally excited about the future of Canadian sport and the role we play in the development of athletes through the Petro-Canada FACE program.”
David Shoemaker, Chief Executive Officer and Secretary General of the Canadian Olympic Committee, added, “Petro-Canada has been a dedicated supporter of Team Canada for almost four decades, and we’re thrilled it has committed to another eight years. Through programs like FACE, the impact Petro-Canada has had on Canadian athletes and the overall success of Team Canada is immeasurable. We’re so glad to have Petro-Canada as part of the team heading into Paris 2024 and many years beyond.”
Karen O’Neill, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Paralympic Committee, said, “Petro-Canada is a valued longtime partner, and we are so pleased to be extending our relationship Petro-Canada and its leadership have shown a deep commitment to Canadian Paralympic sport and athletes, whether it’s through FACE grants, ParaTough Cup, our Family and Friends program, or other initiatives. Thank you to Petro-Canada for their support in showcasing the power of inclusion in sport, and we look forward to continuing our work together for many years to come.”
This extended partnership between Petro-Canada and Team Canada signifies a shared commitment to fostering a thriving athletic environment in Canada and propelling Canadian athletes to achieve their full potential on the world stage.
Petro-Canada’s dedication goes beyond finances. The Fuelling Athlete and Coaching Excellence (FACE) program, established in 1988, has provided over $14 million in grants to more than 3,500 athletes and coaches. These grants are vital for covering training, equipment, coaching education, and competition travel costs.
A dominant force in Canada’s energy landscape, Suncor Energy wears many hats. The petroleum refineries company reigns supreme in extracting bitumen from Alberta’s oil sands, making it the global leader in this area. Suncor then transforms this heavy oil into synthetic crude oil through its upgrader facilities. The company’s reach extends further as it owns the Petro-Canada brand, a familiar name for Canadians at the pump and various petroleum products. This 2009 merger solidified Suncor’s position as Canada’s leading integrated energy company.
