Odisha Govt. extends sponsorship deal with Hockey India; affirms long-term commitment

This extended agreement between Odisha Government and Hockey India builds upon the previous sponsorship established in April 2023 which was originally planned for a decade.

The Odisha Government has solidified its commitment to Indian hockey by extending its sponsorship deal with Hockey India for an additional three years.

This extended agreement builds upon the previous sponsorship established in April 2023. Originally planned for a decade, this new development extends that commitment by three years, coinciding with a momentous occasion for Odisha – the centenary of its establishment as an independent state in 1936. This strategic alignment allows Odisha to celebrate this milestone alongside a flourishing national hockey program.

This commitment now sees Odisha supporting the national hockey teams (senior and junior, both men and women) until 2036.

The extended partnership signifies a deeper collaboration between the state and the governing body of hockey in India. This was solidified during a high-level meeting attended by prominent figures like Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey, and Secretary-General Bhola Nath Singh.

Reacting to the development, Hockey India President Dr. Dilip Tirkey, said, “We had a productive meeting with the Chief Minister. We discussed the advancement of sports and strategies to elevate our beloved sport to new heights. We are thankful to Odisha for their commitment to Indian hockey. This partnership has played a pivotal role in uplifting the sport.”

Secretary-General Bhola Nath Singh, added, “The Government of Odisha has consistently been a pillar of strength for our sport. Their decision to consider extending our partnership until 2036 underscores their dedication to sports and youth development.”

This news is a positive sign for Indian hockey. Odisha has become a national hub for the sport, having successfully hosted prestigious tournaments like the Men’s Hockey World Cup (2018 & 2023) and the FIH Pro Hockey League. Odisha’s continued financial backing will provide crucial resources for the national teams as they strive for international glory.

With the Paris Olympics 2024 on the horizon, the focus now shifts to the men’s national hockey team, fresh off its gold medal win at the Asian Games 2022. The team, aiming to build on its Tokyo Olympics bronze medal, finds itself in Pool B alongside Belgium, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, and Ireland. The unit’s campaign kicks off against New Zealand on July 27 at 9:00 PM IST at Yves-du-Manoir Stadium.
