Netflix announces new docuseries on LaLiga

Although there are few details about the documentary, it is the first sports series that Netflix has produced in Spain.

The American OTT content platform, Netflix has announced a collaboration with LaLiga, the top football league in Spain, for a new documentary series. The forthcoming 2023–24 La Liga season, which will include club behemoths FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, will be documented in the series, which is currently under pre-production.

Although there are just a few details about the documentary, it is the first sports series that Netflix has produced in Spain.

“Similar to Netflix’s growing slate of sports programming such as Formula 1: Drive to Survive and BreakPoint, the series will take an inside look at everything that happens in the professional football league behind the scenes and the more personal stories of one of the most followed leagues in the world,” according to the streamer.

The title, director, and producer of the documentary are now being kept confidential by Netflix, according to a representative of the streaming service.

The announcement came the same week that LaLiga partnered with Banijay Iberia to establish LaLiga Studios. The company stated on its website that it will operate with global platforms and organisations in the conception, production, and distribution of categories such as documentary and fiction and that it would produce content for LaLiga, clubs, sponsors, and broadcasters.

Óscar Mayo, Executive Director of LaLiga, said, “For LaLiga to be the star of Netflix’s first sports series in Spain is a unique opportunity to take our football beyond the fans, to share with the world the excitement of the sport we love, and the chance for all our fans to see LaLiga from a totally different angle.”
