The Olympic and world champion javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra, has taken a decisive step in the evolution of his professional career with the launch of Vel Sports, a new athlete management firm that will oversee his sporting and commercial interests going forward.

The move brings to a close Chopra’s long-standing partnership with JSW Sports, ending a relationship that spanned more than a decade and played a formative role in his rise from a promising junior athlete to one of the most successful track and field stars in global sport. Both parties have described the separation as amicable.

Vel Sports has been established as a formal management entity to handle Chopra’s competitive planning, endorsements, brand partnerships, commercial appearances, and long-term career strategy. The firm is registered as a limited liability partnership, with Chopra listed as a designated partner, underlining his intent to take direct ownership of the management and commercial direction of his career.

Commenting on the transition, Divyanshu Singh, CEO, JSW Sports, said, “Working with Neeraj has been an incredible experience for all of us at JSW Sports. His success story reflects our shared philosophy of excellence and purpose. We’re immensely proud of what we’ve achieved together and wish him continued success in all his future pursuits.”

Neeraj Chopra added, “Over the last decade, our journey together has been one of growth, belief, and achievement. JSW Sports has played a defining role in my career, and I’ll always remain grateful for their support and vision. As we conclude this chapter, I carry forward the same values into the next phase of my journey.”

While Vel Sports has not yet outlined detailed commercial or expansion plans, the launch places Chopra among a growing group of elite athletes globally who are choosing to internalise career management rather than rely exclusively on third-party agencies. Such a structure offers greater control over commercial negotiations, brand positioning, and the long-term development of intellectual property tied to an athlete’s identity.

Chopra’s departure from JSW Sports concludes one of the most prominent athlete-management relationships in Indian sport. During the partnership, Chopra delivered historic achievements, including India’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics at Tokyo 2020, a World Athletics Championships title, and multiple Diamond League victories, cementing his status as the country’s most consistent global performer in track and field.

Industry observers view the formation of Vel Sports as a strategic progression rather than a short-term administrative change. With Chopra entering the latter half of his competitive prime and his international commercial value continuing to grow, the new structure allows for closer alignment between on-field objectives and off-field opportunities.

The launch also creates the potential for Vel Sports to expand beyond Chopra’s personal representation in the future, possibly into athlete development, event properties, or content-driven initiatives linked to athletics. Any such expansion, however, is expected to be gradual, with the immediate focus firmly on managing Chopra’s own competitive and commercial roadmap.

For Indian sport, the move signals a broader shift towards athlete-led career management, particularly within Olympic disciplines where sponsor-driven structures have traditionally dominated. Chopra’s decision to take direct control of his professional representation reflects the increasing maturity of India’s elite athlete ecosystem, where legacy building now extends well beyond podium finishes.
