Covid-19 forces National Sports Awards ceremony to go virtual

For the first time, National Sports Awards ceremony is likely to be held virtually because of the Covid-19 situation. The award ceremony is scheduled on August 29th which is also celebrated as the National Sports Day to mark the birth anniversary of the Hockey legend Mr. Dhyan Chand.

“The sports awards function this year is likely to be an online function. As per the Government of India instructions, the awardees will also be announced on the morning of the day of the function,” a Sports Ministry source told PTI on Monday.

In view of the pandemic, this year the government extended the deadline for nomination of the awards and also gave the liberty to the athletes to nominate themselves for respective awards. The self-nomination has resulted in a huge number of applicants for the awards.

The National Sports Awards constitute of the ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award’ is the highest sporting honour of the Republic of India, the ‘Arjuna Award’ is a recognition to the outstanding achievement of the year, ‘Dronacharya Award’ is sports coaching honour of the Republic of India and the ‘Dhyan Chand Award’ is a life-time achievement award, which are conferred every year by the President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 29 on the auspicious occasion of National Sports day.
