Gokulam Kerala have announced that their top player, Manisha Kalyan has signed a two-year contract with Apollon Ladies.
The 20-year-old has represented Gokulam Kerala for three seasons and has won the Indian Women’s League twice. She is also the first Indian player to net a goal in the continental tournament, AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022.
Apollon will play Riga FS of Latvia in the first round of UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying on August 18. If the team comes out victorious, they will face the winner of the fixture between FC Zurich and Klaksvik Kvinnur.
Kalyan is a left-wing forward who is clearly running the channels, driving at defensive players before cutting in and gunning down a goal on a regular and frequent basis. She shot to national prominence after scoring a spectacular goal against Brazil in a friendly tournament in South America.
She also became the 2020-21’s All India Football Federation (AIFF) emerging player of the year. She had recently represented BBK DAV Football Club, Paldi Football Academy, Kenkre FC, Sethu Madurai, and Doaba Sporting Club on short-term contracts. According to the AIFF website, she has performed 51 games for club and country, scoring 40 goals. With 14 goals, she was the league’s second-leading scorer this season.
Kalyan is the second Gokulam player to move abroad, following her colleague Dangmei Grace, who joined Uzbekistan’s FC Nasaf.
