LaLiga teams up with Twitch in launching weekly highlights show

This association was made possible through Mediapro.

LaLiga has announced that it will broadcast the summaries and matchday highlights of all games on Twitch from this Monday onwards. The program will be hosted by sports journalist Ruben Martin.

LaLiga is the first major European League to collaborate with Twitch to increase fan engagement and increase its digital presence. This association was made possible through Mediapro who is responsible for managing and distributing media rights in the country.

This move by LaLiga is in context to curb down digital piracy in Spain. According to reports, Spain saw a seven per cent year-on-year decrease in accessing illegal content online. However, this did not stop 71 million soccer fans to tune into illegal streams and websites to enjoy the LaLiga action. This illegal streaming has cost the industry to miss out on $268 million in revenue.

Social media platforms remain a central hub for accessing and streaming illegal content, with reports stating an increase from 23 per cent to 27 per cent last year. The most common platforms for accessing this pirated content were Facebook (55%), YouTube (39%), WhatsApp (34%), Instagram (28%), Telegram (25%) and followed by Twitter (24%).

With the number of pirated sports content in Spain remaining the same from 2019 to 2020, LaLiga came up with its anti-piracy technology, which is now under the watch of its new LaLiga Tech subsidiary banned and removed more than 1.5 million illegal sources last season. The Spanish soccer team has also joined in by launching complaints to block 23 different websites and complaints against 32 IPTV website operators.

In India, Viacom18 network secured the television and streaming rights for LaLiga. There were no TV sponsors for the Spanish top flight for the last two seasons, as Facebook took over from Sony Networks. The Viacom18 is set to telecast matches through its TV channel MTV and all the matches will be live telecasted on their OTT platform Voot and Jio TV.
