Google and LALIGA have expanded their strategic collaboration aimed at promoting the sustainable development of the digital ecosystem, reinforcing efforts to combat piracy, protect intellectual property rights and strengthen trust across online platforms.
The enhanced partnership builds on an ongoing relationship between the technology giant and Spain’s premier football competition, with both organisations working closely to address one of the sports industry’s most pressing challenges: the unauthorised distribution of digital content.
As part of the collaboration, LALIGA has leveraged Google’s reporting and enforcement tools to improve the identification and removal of infringing content across the company’s services. The organisations reported tangible progress during the 2025-26 season, including a reduction in piracy-related incidents, faster processing of content protection requests and more efficient communication channels between the two parties.
The initiative reflects a shared commitment to creating a safer and more transparent digital environment while ensuring that content creators, rights holders and fans can benefit from a sustainable online ecosystem. With media rights revenues continuing to underpin the commercial success of professional sports, protecting digital assets has become an increasingly important priority for leagues and broadcasters worldwide.
Lino Cattaruzzi, President of Google Iberia, said, “For Google, respect for intellectual property rights and the provision of a safe digital environment are fundamental pillars. That is why we have multiple mechanisms in place to prevent the misuse of our tools by third parties, and we maintain ongoing investment in technology to actively combat piracy. This close collaboration with LALIGA demonstrates that, through proactive communication and the proper use of our reporting channels across our products, it is possible to provide content creators with highly effective, agile, and transparent technical solutions that bring security to the entertainment sector.”
LALIGA President Javier Tebas added, “LALIGA remains firmly committed to the fight against piracy. Collaboration is essential to putting an end to this scourge, and being able to count on major players such as Google strengthens us in our purpose. Now, together with Google, we are becoming increasingly effective in defending football, intellectual property, the entertainment sector, and the integrity of fans.”
The agreement further expands Google’s growing footprint within the global sports industry. The company maintains partnerships and technology collaborations across major sporting properties, including the Indian Premier League, the National Basketball Association, Formula 1 team McLaren Racing, Serie A club Napoli, the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the International Cricket Council.
For LALIGA, the partnership represents another step in its broader strategy of working alongside technology leaders to preserve the value of sports media rights and ensure the long-term sustainability of football in an increasingly digital world.
