La Liga clubs told to terminate Sports Betting sponsorships

The Spanish government has told La Liga clubs to cut ties with Sports betting operators by September 2021. Most La Liga clubs are associated with betting companies in one way or the other.

A letter from Spanish Minister for Consumer Affairs Alberto Garzón was sent out to all the affiliated clubs urging them to cancel contracts with gambling companies for advertisement as soon as possible. The La Liga clubs have expressed disappointment over this rule.

Since there has been a great surge in young people involved in gambling, it is a great move from the Spanish government. They are planning to completely ban gambling advertisements and has even rolled out a warning letter to the clubs that don’t have any ties with gambling companies.

The league currently has seven different clubs that will be affected by this rule. Real Betis, Levante, Alaves, Cadiz, Granada, Sevilla, and Valencia all are sponsored by various betting companies. La Liga will also have to drop the deal with Sportium to follow the rule implemented by the government.
