Junior Firpo set to sign for Leeds United: Report

The Barcelona left back is said to on the cusp of a £12.8million switch and is set to undergo a medical before making the switch to Elland Road, according to The Athletic.

Barcelona is looking to shift players as they try to reduce their huge wage bill. The Spanish giants reportedly keen to release Samuel Umtiti and Miralem Pjanic and loan out Philippe Coutinho. Junior Firpo’s first-team chances were reduced under Ronald Koeman, with Firpo making just seven La Liga appearances last season and featuring 18 times in total in all competitions.

Junior Firpo is in England as he prepares to complete a permanent move to Leeds United. The Barcelona left-back is on the cusp of a €15 million switch to the Elland Roadside. He has travelled to Leeds ahead of a medical. Ahead of an official deal likely to be announced next week, according to The Athletic. Left-back is a priority position for Leeds during the summer transfer window.

With his 25th birthday next month, Firpo knows he needs regular football. Firpo is a 24-year-old defender who was born in the Dominican Republic. He moved to Spain at the age of six and has since represented them at the youth international level. Firpo broke through at Real Betis after joining them at the age of 18. He made 38 league appearances for the senior side before joining Barcelona in 2019 for €18 million.

Firpo has featured sparingly for Barcelona, playing just 41 times in the last two seasons in all competitions. Leeds spent most of last season without a conventional left-back.

The player who featured there most often, Gjanni Alioski, has spent the last few seasons primarily playing as a winger. Alioski’s contract with Leeds expired at the end of June. There is currently a fresh, contract offer on the table for the North Macedonia international, but he is yet to accept it. Leeds consequently needs a left-back ahead of the new season.
