JioStar unveils major sports overhaul with Sports18 integration

The company will consolidate its Sports18 channels under the iconic Star Sports banner, while simultaneously amplifying its regional language offerings.

JioStar, the collaborative venture between Reliance Industries, Disney, and Bodhi Tree, has unveiled a sweeping transformation of its sports broadcasting division. The company will consolidate its Sports18 channels under the iconic Star Sports banner, while simultaneously amplifying its regional language offerings, signalling a clear intent to dominate India’s dynamic sports entertainment landscape.

This ambitious overhaul centres on leveraging the established brand recognition of Star Sports, aiming to create a unified and streamlined viewing experience for millions of Indian sports enthusiasts. The rebranding initiative, effective from March 15, sees the Sports18 channels seamlessly transition into the Star Sports family, fostering a sense of familiarity and trust among viewers.

A pivotal aspect of JioStar’s strategy lies in its commitment to catering to the diverse linguistic tapestry of India. Recognizing the burgeoning demand for regional sports content, the company is launching and rebranding channels in key languages, including Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil. This regional expansion will be further enhanced by the introduction of high-definition (HD) versions of these channels, ensuring a premium, immersive viewing experience for subscribers across the country.

The restructured portfolio will boast 24 channels, encompassing Standard Definition (SD) and HD formats. Key changes include:

  • Sports18 1 transforming into Star Sports 2 Hindi, with its HD counterpart becoming Star Sports 2 Hindi HD.
  • Sports18 2 rebranding as Star Sports 2 Telugu, accompanied by the launch of Star Sports 2 Telugu HD.
  • Sports18 3 became Star Sports 2 Tamil, with the introduction of Star Sports 2 Tamil HD.
  • Sports18 Khel evolving into Star Sports Khel.
  • Star Sports First transitioning to Star Sports 2 Kannada.

This strategic realignment not only strengthens JioStar’s sports offering but also reflects its commitment to delivering localized content that resonates with regional audiences.

Simultaneously, JioStar is refining its entertainment channel portfolio. Popular channels Colors Rishtey and Star Utsav will transition to Free-to-Air (FTA) platforms, expanding their reach. Conversely, channels such as Comedy Central (SD and HD), Vh1 (SD and HD), MTV Beats (SD and HD), Bindass, Colors Odia, and Star Kiran HD will be discontinued, allowing JioStar to focus on its core offerings.

The implementation of these changes is expected to occur over the coming weeks, with JioStar prioritizing a smooth transition for its viewers. This strategic move positions JioStar as a formidable force in the Indian sports broadcasting industry, highlighting its ambition to deliver unparalleled sports entertainment experiences to a vast and diverse audience. The timing of this change, just before the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season, shows JioStar’s intent to capture the large audience that the IPL provides.
