Jeff Luhnow-led consortium acquires football club CD Leganés

The club was previously owned by Pavón and Moreno, a local couple who bought the team in 2008.

CD Leganés, the Spanish soccer club, have been purchased by an investment consortium led by the former Houston Astros General Manager, Jeff Luhnow.

“We will do all we can to improve this club,” Luhnow declared in Madrid after acquiring the club from previous owners for an undisclosed amount.

Club Deportivo Leganés participate in Segunda División, the second division of Spanish football.

The club was previously owned by Pavón and Moreno, a local couple who bought the team in 2008. In 2016, the club was promoted to LaLiga for the first time and competed with the top teams in Spain for four seasons before being relegated. The team’s most notable achievement was in the 2017-18 season when it defeated Real Madrid on its way to the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

Luhnow explained that his group chose Leganés because they believe Spanish soccer has the best development potential in Europe, partly thanks to the league’s strict cost-cutting measures.

As the new club president, Luhnow stated that his organisation intends to establish youth teams, promote its women’s team, and invest in technologies such as big data analytics.

Luhnow said, “All sports have used technology to create advantages, and that is what we want to do,” We have a group of people with experience including the Premier League and the MLS who know how to use technology, and Leganés can take advantage of that. Soccer is a bit behind other sports … but that is going to change in the coming years.”
