Japan bids for 2025 World Athletics Championships

Japan has hosted the event in the past during 1991 in Tokyo and 2007 in Osaka

Kyodo News has reported that the Japan Association of Athletics Federations has put forward a bid to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships.

It was mentioned by the Japanese news agency that, the JAAF joined the bid by the October 1 deadline, which was set by World Athletics. After successfully hosting the Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games, Tokyo is all set to host the Championships and the only thing left is for the JAAF to discuss with the local governments.

Japan has hosted the event in the past during 1991 in Tokyo and 2007 in Osaka. The World Athletics is yet to decide on the host of the 2025 Championships.

According to reports, World Athletics president Sebastian Coe confirmed with the JAAF in October 2020 that he expected to see Tokyo’s National Stadium, which was reconstructed for Tokyo 2020, host the 2025 Worlds. The statement was repeated by him during this summer’s adjourned Games, representing that Tokyo should host international athletics meets ahead in a few years.

Japan in 2017 had initially decided to convert the National Stadium into an exclusive football ground after Tokyo 2020, but according to Kyodo News, it may be kept as a multi-purpose facility.

After Doha hosting the 2019 World Athletics Championships, the American city Eugene will stage the next campaign in 2022 as it was adjourned by a year to resist it from colliding with the rescheduled Olympics.

It will be later hosted in Budapest, Hungary in 2023.
