The J.League has appointed global sports marketing agency IMG to develop and execute a renewed international sponsorship strategy, as Japan’s professional football league looks to strengthen its commercial presence beyond Asia.
Under the partnership, IMG will advise J.League on its global brand architecture, develop new sponsorship categories and drive international commercial sales. The mandate is designed to connect J.League with a broader pool of international brands while creating new commercial opportunities around the league’s clubs, players and wider football ecosystem.
Yoshikazu Nonomura, the Chairman of J.League, said, “Partnering with IMG marks a significant milestone in expanding J.League’s global footprint. Combining IMG’s deep expertise with J.League will allow us to create meaningful opportunities for our partners and the league.”
Adolfo Bara, SVP and Managing Director, Football, IMG added, “J.League represents many of the qualities that make football such a powerful global platform: authenticity, community, long-term vision and excellence. Japanese football and its players, clubs and wider ecosystem continue to grow in relevance and recognition around the world. We believe J.League has all the ingredients to become one of the leading leagues in world football in the years ahead. We look forward to helping bring the league’s story to global brand partners at such an exciting time in its evolution.”
The partnership gives J.League access to IMG’s extensive international football commercial network. The appointment comes at an important juncture for J.League’s international expansion. Beginning with the 2026-27 season, the competition has shifted to an August-to-May calendar, bringing its schedule closer to major European leagues. The league is also expanding its international media and digital presence, including English-language coverage through J.LEAGUE International.
For J.League, the IMG partnership is therefore positioned as a strategic commercial play rather than a conventional sponsorship-sales arrangement. By combining its domestic football platform and growing international reach with IMG’s global sales capabilities, the league aims to establish a stronger proposition for multinational brands and accelerate the international commercialisation of Japanese football.
