MG Motor is set to become the title sponsor of the Indian Super League (ISL) in a two-year partnership reportedly worth more than INR 30 crore, bringing a title sponsor back to the tournament after a three-season absence.

According to sources, the final paperwork between MG Motor and the ISL is nearing completion and is anticipated to be finalised shortly. Once finished, the tournament will be known as the MG Indian Super League (MG ISL), with the automaker’s logo appearing on the league crest.

The alliance will provide MG Motor substantial branding across the ISL ecosystem, and the brand plans to award MG Motors to the league’s top performers at the end of the season.

The ISL has been without a title sponsor since Hero MotoCorp dissolved its partnership with the league following the 2022-23 season. Hero MotoCorp has been the ISL’s title sponsor from the league’s inception in 2014, making the association one of the longest in Indian football.

The partnership gives MG Motor access to one of India’s most well-known football brands and its massive national fan following. The collaboration also allows the carmaker to integrate its brand with football through matchday exposure, player partnerships, content, and consumer-facing activations.

A New Phase for the ISL Commercially

For the ISL, the reintroduction of a title sponsor brings back an essential commercial asset that has been missing since 2023.

The MG Motor arrangement comes as the ISL enters a new commercial phase, with clubs gaining more influence over the league’s commercial activities following a reform of the competition’s corporate model.

The league’s commercial ecology has generally been built through a combination of title sponsorship, associate partnerships, broadcast rights, club sponsorships, tickets, and merchandise. A new title sponsor has importance beyond the competition’s logo.

MG Motor’s entrance might further enhance the deal between the automobile industry and Indian football, since the sector has already been involved in cricket, football, and other athletic activities.

End of a Three-Season Title Sponsorship Gap

The MG Motor deal would eliminate the ISL’s title sponsorship gap, which occurred following the 2022-23 season. Since then, the ISL has been without a title sponsor to its name.

Hero MotoCorp’s withdrawal signalled the end of an alliance that had existed since the league’s inaugural season in 2014.

If completed, MG Motor’s two-year arrangement will provide the tournament a new commercial identity while also providing the carmaker with a long-term foundation in Indian football.

The ISL is set to formally announce the deal once the final documentation is completed.
