ISL 2021/22: Bengaluru FC part ways with Rahul Bheke

Indian Super League (ISL) club Bengaluru FC announced the departure of defender Rahul Bhekeon Monday. The 30-year-old spent four seasons at the club and made 88 appearances with 12 goals to his name. He also scored the ISL title-winning goal in the 2018-19 final against FC Goa. BFC also bid goodbye to Spanish central midfielder Dimas Delgado and Harmanjot Khabra, who also spent four years at the club, on Sunday.

Bheke will be joining defending champions Mumbai City FC. The veteran defender had an injury-laden season and played in only 15 matches. The full-back scored one goal and provided one assist. He started his career at Air India and later moved to Mumbai FC in the I-League. In 2015, he left Mumbai FC to join East Bengal. He will return to his hometown after six years.

The full-back will be looking to rediscover his form for Mumbai City FC next season after a frustrating spell out with constant injuries. He will be joining a team that is on an upward trajectory in ISL.  Bheke was also included in Igor Stimac’s side for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and Asian championship matches which are to be held in Qatar. Earlier today, Mumbai City FC had announced the departure of Arminder Singh. The 27-year-old goalkeeper will be joining ATK Mohun Bagan on a free transfer.

BFC had a disappointing season last year. The team finished seventh in the league with just 22 points to their name. This was the first time the team failed to finish in the top four since their arrival in the top flight in 2017. The Bangalore-based team also found themselves in controversy in the last few weeks. Bengaluru FC’s AFC Cup play-off match against Eagles FC on May 11 in the Maldives was cancelled after the host country’s sports minister asked them to leave the country after breaching COVID-19 protocols.
